EMMA.K

Based on Der Prozess by Franz Kafka, a version for children aged 10 and up. Text by Giuseppe Lonobile, Emma K., published by Lansman Édition and translated into Luxembourgish by Josée Klincker.

On her twelfth birthday, Emma K wakes up expecting a celebration. But her parents have gone on holiday with her little brother, leaving Emma alone with a strange man who looks like a fly and informs her that she is under arrest. No one tells her why she has been arrested or what she is accused of. She must patiently wait for her trial while continuing to go to school.

As her adventures unfold, the young girl discovers that many children have been arrested, and that the justice system is slow and incapable. Authority, from which nothing positive seems to emerge, is always represented by animals. The judges are penguins, or cruel and foolish rats, while the police are lazy and opportunistic flies.

This play is a fable about free will. Emma gradually learns that growing up means forming her own ideas about the world, understanding that other people’s truths are not necessarily the right ones, and that free will is the very foundation of all freedom.
